Hypnotherapy & Counselling
Frequently Asked Questions
Hypnotherapy
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is essentially a simple, down-to-earth, and common sense therapy. For example, by relaxing, thinking positively, and picturing your goals, hypnosis can help you to progressively improve your habitual feelings and behaviour.
What if I can't be hypnotised?
The only people who can't be hypnotised are those who don't want to be hypnotised. Everyone else can be hypnotised, but response levels can vary from person to person. Hypnotic skills training can be used to get a better response to suggestions. Hypnotic suggestion is a means of experiencing certain helpful ideas at a level profound enough to directly influence our emotions and behaviour. Everyone can learn how to be hypnotised and get benefits out of it.
Will I be unconscious or asleep?
Hypnotherapy is a state of calm, relaxed, focused attention creating suggestions and commands directed to your mind for conscious change. At no point will you be unconscious; in fact you will be aware of everything and be in control of yourself throughout the hypnotic process. You may feel sleepy; like you are in a pleasant dreamlike state but you can always open your eyes if you wish to.
Is hypnosis mind control?
Not at all! It is actually impossible for a hypnotherapist to control the mind of their client because you have to allow yourself to enter a hypnotic state. Even when in hypnosis you and your mind will be fully in control and you would react the same way if someone told you to do something silly or stupid in a hypnotic state as you would when you are awake.
Will it be like stage hypnosis on TV?
Comedy stage hypnosis has very little to do with clinical hypnotherapy and has been shown to foster misconceptions which can prevent people form benefiting from treatment. Take what you see on television with a generous pinch of salt. You will always be treated with respect, and your confidentiality will be safeguarded.
What can hypnotherapy help with?
Hypnosis can help with an enormous range of different issues. Research tends to provide most support for its use in:
- Anxiety management (panic attacks, phobias, fears, etc)
- Pain management
- Overcoming sleep disorders
- Treating certain psychosomatic or stress-related illnesses.
How long do I have to be in hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is one of the fastest psychological therapies around today and will take an average of 5-10 sessions. This will be discussed on an individual basis in the first session.
Counselling
What is counselling?
Counselling is a process whereby you can safely explore your feelings and talk them over to make sense of certain painful situations and/or events in your life; past or present. When discussing issues in a confidential environment with a trained counsellor you can start to understand and get insight into what is happening in your life, and find your own way forward.
How long do I have to be in counselling?
It will vary how many counselling sessions you need depending on how long you feel the need to continue. On average people come for 1 year; but some less and some more. This will be discussed individually in your sessions.
Can counselling and hypnotherapy be combined?
Yes, hypnosis can be used as part of counselling sessions but would not take on the specific goal focused framework of cognitive hypnotherapy.
